Path Forward Committee

The 6th month Meeting for Worship (MfW) with Attention to Business (wAtB) was held on June 6th. Significant changes were approved that loosened the pandemic era restrictions at the meetinghouse.

  • Persons visiting the meetinghouse no longer need to log their visit.
  • Masks are optional while outside the meetinghouse.
  • Masks are optional if you are alone in the meetinghouse.
  • People are welcome to gather socially outside the meetinghouse when other events are not scheduled at the meetinghouse.
  • Early Meeting, that is the 8:00 am MfW, is held on the 2nd, 4th and 5th Sundays. They can move inside when the weather is not conducive for meeting outside no matter how many people are attending. Everyone will stay physically distanced, wear masks and the windows will be opened to the extent feasible.
  • Committees may meet at the meetinghouse and decide among themselves whether they will wear masks while meeting provided that they have had an honest discussion about each person’s comfort level and will honor and respect the need for everyone to wear masks if there is anyone who feels that masks should be worn.
  • Memorial Meetings can now be held at the meetinghouse for the AFM community providing that both the Path Forward Committee and the Pastoral Care Committee are involved with the planning. The Center for Disease Control (CDC) guidelines and any federal, state or county regulations will also be followed.

Quaker Market Committee

The AFM Quaker Market Committee announced that the Quaker Spring Market that was held on May 1, 2021 was a great success. There were pandemic restrictions and it was not the usual in-person event, but as a pre-order and curbside pick-up event, it served to bring the community together and enrich lives. The proceeds provided $4,875 for distribution to three causes, plus $100 will be for the AFM Youth who will discern what cause they would like to donate. The three causes are Interfaith Power & Light, The Ralph J. Bunche Community Center and the Friends United Meeting COVID-19 Solidarity Fund and they will each receive $1,625.

For more information, see the June 6th MfW wAtB meeting minutes or contact the Quaker Market Committee (Cairn K.) at market@annapolisfriends.org.

Sacred Chant & Dance

On June 13th at 9:15 am to 10:45 am the Ministry & Worship (M&W) Committee will host the Sacred Chant and Dance for the Meeting for Learning (MfL). The plan is to hold this OUTDOORS and IN-PERSON at the Meetinghouse. If the weather is disagreeable, the virtual online option will be announced using the AFM-Announce email list.

All are warmly invited to participate in AFM’s Sacred Chant & Dances. The dance is akin to the ancient traditions of various folk dances around the world. We dance together in a circle, often with hands joined (virtually), in easy movements with simple, repetitive chants. The circle provides that each person has a unique place, equal to one another, and at the same proximity to the Center. This is a symbol of our journey together, supporting and sustaining one another as a Community. After each dance/chant, we gently transition to a moment of stillness and silence as we open to the sweet awareness of the Divine within, between, and around us and all things

Juneteenth, June 19th

Also known as Freedom Day, Jubilee Day, Liberation Day, and Emancipation Day, Juneteenth is a holiday celebrating the emancipation of those who had been enslaved in the United States. On June 19, 1865 the Union Army proclaimed that slaves were free with General Order No. 3.

Friendly 8s

Friendly 8s is a Quaker tradition around area Monthly Meetings. It is a gathering of about eight Annapolis Friends, as well as family members or partners who may not be active in AFM, to dine together and enjoy conversation. Each September, Pastoral Care sends requests for interest and then groups responders so we can get to know one another better. The groups self organize, often meeting monthly from October through spring. We typically have at least two groups, mostly meeting by Zoom since the start of the pandemic.

For more information, contact Barb T. at pastoral-care@annapolisfriends.org.

5th Night Light – Every Thursday evening

From 7:00 pm until 8:00 pm on every Thursday, the AFM community engages in a spiritual practice that acknowledges the Light of God within each person and that to be in community is to actively care for one another. During that time, Friends hold people and situations who need additional spiritual support in the Light. Friends will pause wherever they may be, read the list of names, and hold each person or situation in our hearts and in the Light. On Wednesday, the list of names or situations are sent out to the AFM-Announce list.

For more information, contact Pastoral Care at pastoral-care@annapolisfriends.org.
