Meetings for Learning

On March 14th at 9:15 am to 10:45 am the Ministry & Worship (M&W) Committee will host the Sacred Chant and Dance for the Meeting for Learning (MfL). This virtual meeting is designed to facilitate spiritual and personal growth. All are warmly invited to participate in AFM’s Sacred Chant & Dances. The dance is akin to the ancient traditions of various folk dances around the world. We dance together in a circle, often with hands joined (virtually), in easy movements with simple, repetitive chants. The circle provides that each person has a unique place, equal to one another, and at the same proximity to the Center. This is a symbol of our journey together, supporting and sustaining one another as a Community. After each dance/chant, we gently transition to a moment of stillness and silence as we open to the sweet awareness of the Divine within, between, and around us and all things

On March 28th at 9:15 am the Ministry & Worship Committee will be presenting the third in the series of the Introduction to Quakerism and the topic will be Contemporary Friends and Theological Diversity. There will be a lecture, video and slides for this presentation, as well as a question & answer session.

Quaker Voice of Maryland

The Updates from Week 7

  • Chesapeake Climate Action Network lobby week, which Quaker Voice took part in to show support for Climate Solutions Now, included over 50 virtual meetings with representatives; shout out to all Friends who took part in this great event!
  • Climate Solutions Now was voted on in both Senate Committees, and the outcome was favorable in at least one; check out our bill update sheet to learn more.
  • We are especially keeping an eye on the 5 Demands for Police Accountability bills –> repealing the LEOBR is especially in trouble right now. Check out this livestream clip from the General Assembly Senate Chamber on 2/19 where Sen. Carter speaks to her concern for amendments watering down the “repeal LEOBR” bill and check out our alerts below to take action.

Action Alerts for Week 8 (3/1-3/5):

  • Action Alert 1 – Support Ombudsman (Link): Friends can show support for one of our criminal justice priorities, creating a Maryland Ombudsman to provide independent oversight and reporting of prison conditions, by contacting their representatives using our sample emails. The bill (SB0809/HB1188) has committee hearings on 3/9. Action alert and more information can be found on our website: https://www.quakervoicemd.org/legislative-session
  • Action Alert 2 – Support Repeal of LEOBR (Link): Maryland Coalition for Justice & Police Accountability, the lead behind the 5 Demands for Police Accountability, is asking for our support. There is concern that the repeal of the Law Enforcement Bill of Rights (SB0627), aka “LEOBR”, legislation has been “watered down” by amendments and no longer meets the original bill goal. Friend and working group member Ellen Lerner had a piece published in the Frederick News-Post (Link) speaking to the importance of this legislation. Use our action alert to learn more and take action before a possible Tuesday voting session!
  • “How to Create Change” Presentation Video: The recording from our presentation hosted by Patapsco Friends in January is now LIVE on our website; if you want to relive the moment or share with Friends who may find the content useful check it out on our website –> https://www.quakervoicemd.org/resources/advocacy-training-materials The Q&A resource document and slides are also posted as a resource.
  • “Annapolis Lunch Break” on Mondays @ 12:15pm: Quaker Voice is hosting an opportunity to meet up in a virtual space with Friends, touch base on the Action Alert for the week, and then go take action. The meet-up should only take 10-15 minutes. If you are new to advocacy work or need a little extra support to feel confident to take the action, this meet up is for you!  If you are interested in joining here is the link to the Google Meeting –> https://meet.google.com/dcc-hsbq-bbg.

5th Night Light – Every Thursday evening

From 7:00 pm until 8:00 pm, the AFM community engages in a spiritual practice that acknowledges the Light of God within each person and that to be in community is to actively care for one another. During that time, Friends hold people and situations who need additional spiritual support in the Light. Friends will pause wherever they may be, read the list of names, and hold each person or situation in our hearts and in the Light. On Wednesday, the list of names or situations are sent out to the AFM-Announce list.
