Annapolis Friends Meeting (AFM) elected to organize under the Maryland religious corporations statutes in 1979. Additionally, AFM bylaws and IRS Sec. 501(c)(3) rules for tax-exempt religious organizations set forth the relevant AFM legal guidelines. Under the AFM governing documents, “Trustees alone are held legally responsible for the administration of Meeting Property, real and personal”.
At least four trustees and the Treasurer (ex-officio) serve annual terms as AFM’s official legal representatives.
In practice, substantially all these AFM functions are delegated to the AFM Committees and the Monthly Meetings for Worship with Attention to Business. Administration is widely disbursed among participating Friends. The trustees thus function day- to- day in an advisory role to the Committees, as well as for legal, liability, funding issues and confirmation of budgets and officer nominees.
