Our main Meeting for Worship gathers at 11 am every Sunday. Greeters at the main door of the meetinghouse welcome old and new Friends alike and are happy to answer questions or provide guidance. Dress is casual. Childcare and First Day (Sunday) School are available. Upon entering the room, you may sit anywhere you like.
At Annapolis Friends Meeting, we practice unprogrammed worship. This form of worship is based on silent waiting, where we expect to come into the presence of God. Worshiping together in silence is a way for a community to be brought together in love and faithfulness. We have no designated minister, pre-arranged prayers, sermons, or hymns.
With no paid minister, we all undertake the responsibilities of ministry. Anyone may feel inspired to give vocal ministry (speak out of the silence). After the message, the silence resumes. Such messages may be offered several times during a meeting for worship, or the whole period of worship may be silent.
First Day School participants will join the Meeting for Worship during the last 10-15 minutes. When the hour is over, an appointed Friend will break the meeting by shaking hands with a neighbor. Everyone responds by similarly welcoming those seated nearby.
Afterwards, there will be some sharing, introductions, and announcements followed by time to socialize and get to know one another.
On the first Sunday of every month, we have a potluck lunch directly following Meeting for Worship. Although meal contributions are welcome, they are not required as prerequisite to attendance. Please bring your hunger and fellowship! We love to meet and greet.
